HAWXX – Interview with Hannah Staphnill!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Hannah Staphnill, guitarist of HAWXX – an amazing all-female up and coming band!

Named after the bird of prey, with the double XX symbolising the double XX female chromosome. HAWXX write songs that reflect the lies of our current political climate, about self empowerment and how love’s a bitch.

Read the interview below and make sure you check out their new single ‘Deadlands‘!

How are you? How are you dealing with isolation and social distancing?

We’re missing each other! Getting very jealous of bands where members live together. We want to play and eat and drink together again!
Other than that, a mixture of fine and terrible.

When quarantine is over, who’s the first person you want to hug, first place you want to visit and first band you want to see live?

We want to hug each other, IN A PUB, and then get on stage!

How did it feel to win the PRS Women Make Music Award?

Genuinely screamed when we found out – it’s such an honour and amazing to think they see that potential in us – their support means a lot.

You’ve recently released your latest single ‘Deadlands’, what has the response to it been like so far?

It’s been great! It’s probably had the biggest number of streams within the first couple of weeks than any other track. Seems to have really resonated with our Israeli fanbase as the last I checked we had 1k listeners in Israel alone! It’s been great to see people connecting with the track.

Which of your latest singles is your favourite and why?

I guess we shouldn’t really have favourites as good song parents!

Does the band have any musical influences?

The band has so many influences! We are all lovers of all things heavy like Gojira, Deftones, Meshuggah and Tool but there is also a big influence from singer songwriters/poets in terms of lyrics and melody like Kate Tempest, PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi and Patti Smith.

We also all come from very different musical backgrounds – I come from a classical music background, Anna comes from a Greek folk/ classical music background and Jess and Iman come from a jazz background.

What bands/artists have you been listening to the most while in isolation?

Karnivool, Bjork, Kate Tempest, Code Orange, Deftones, Meshuggah, PJ Harvey, Angel Olsen, King Crimson

If you could be a superhero for a day, who would you be and what would you do?

I mean..if we didnt do something about Corona, we’d be dicks. Anti-viral Girls?

Do you have any favourite TV series that you could recommend to us?

I’m watching John Oliver‘s Last Week Tonight weekly, catching up on Walking Dead. Not a TV Series but I’ve just completed Lifers podcast with Ed Gamble on Spotify – he talks to musicians about their lives in the metal world and would def recommend that- really interesting.

Are any of you gamers? If so, which games do you play?

I’m in to my retro games on my Raspberry Pi – did a whole evening of drinking and Street Fighter recently. I’m from the school of mashing the buttons until something happens.

What can we expect from Hawxx in 2020?

A lot of social media action! We’ve been coming up with creative ways of getting HAWXX out there now that we’re not gigging so do follow us! (@hawxxmusic)

You can also expect a few more singles and hopefully an EP launch on October 8th at The Black Heart, Camden.

Special

Icarus Falls – Interview with Harvey Wigg!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Harvey Wigg, guitarist of Icarus Falls – an amazing up and coming band from Brighton, England.

Read the interview below and make sure you check out their new single ‘Phoenix‘, out 22nd May 2020!

How are you? How are you dealing with isolation and social distancing?

We are very well thanks! Isolation isn’t TOO bad for us, as I live with our drummer and we’re lucky enough to have a recording studio at our place. I like to think we are spending our time wisely, writing and recording and preparing!

We’re sticking to social distancing measures although like most musicians we are absolutely itching to get back to gigging or at least a good jam! But it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

When quarantine is over, who’s the first person you want to hug, first place you want to visit and first band you want to see live?

Let’s face it we are all looking forward to being able to get back into the pub and have a good session with our friends and family! First band is a difficult one as there is so many! But I was hoping to go Ramblin Man Fair this year with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Clutch and Monster Truck on the line up, that would have been a good show!

How would you describe your sound to any new listeners?

Always a good question and always a difficult one, we previously have been compared to “Black Stone Cherry meets Alice in Chains”. Although we are always curious to hear what the fans think!

Out of the videos for ‘Protector’ and ‘Venom’, which was more fun to film and why?

They were both fun for different reasons, Venom was fun because of the nice big venue and the lighting and Protector was fun because of the story and the acting behind it. We’ve used Shaun Hodson of Loki Films for all of our videos and we always have a good laugh with him and he’s very good at getting our vision to screen!

Does the band have any musical influences?

As far as influences go, there are so many, being a five piece band we all have the same taste yet also very different tastes … so when we get together our sound becomes an amalgamation of them all ie;

Me (Harvey): anything southern rock / bluesy guitar. Such as Black Stone Cherry, ZZ Top etc.

Doug: a lot of 90s grunge. Such as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam

Lawrence: metal such as Slipknot and Periphery

Jono: bluesy funk stuff such as The Doors, Red Hot Chili Peppers etc.

Josh: from Led Zeppelin to Tool and Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes!

What bands/artists have you been listening to the most while in isolation?

Looking on my Spotify now I’ve got bands such as Shinedown, Halestorm, Oasis and The Cadillac Three.

I’ve also got a couple of other genres music such as Dr Dre’s The chronic and Snoop dogg!

Do you have a favourite track you enjoy playing live the most?

For me I’d have to say ‘Venom‘! Always gets the crowd going, which we obviously feed off!

If you could grab a coffee from a character from a movie, book or TV series who would it be and why?

First character that comes to mind is The Dude from The Big Lewbowski because you know it would be hilarious!

What can we expect from Icarus Falls in 2020?

First thing up is May 22nd our new single “Phoenix” is coming out and a music video shortly after that. Another single and music video before the end of 2020 with lots more in 2021!

Must-see movies to watch this October in the run-up to Halloween 2019

Halloween is my favourite holiday ever! I’m one of those people that start thinking about their costume mid-summer and share “is it Halloween yet” memes in May – if you follow our Instagram you might have noticed – soz!

I just LOVE being creepy and there’s nothing as exciting as spooky season for me and the build up to it is just magical (even more than Christmas, my birthday, 4 puppies with red ribbons and a trip to Disneyland all together!) – cause basically Halloween is not just a day – it’s a season:

Just think of the autumn colours, leaves on the floor, pumpkin spice lattes… It’s also more socially accepted to wear black or dark lipsticks and be pale (let’s face it – when you’re too pale in summer you will always get that person making jokes about your skin tone to which you have to politely answer with a fake smile and a “funny, very funny! Never heard the joke about vampires/burning/or if I’m Marilyn Manson’s daughter before”) and it’s an excuse to buy new cosy jumpers and hoodies, boots and coats.
Plus the colder weather doesn’t make you feel as guilty for spending your evenings or days off indoors gaming, reading or watching horror movies to get into a creepy mood and look for Halloween outfit inspo.

So on the run up to Halloween I just love to keep some free time in my evenings or weekends to snuggle up with a fluffy blanket and cosy pyjamas and simply eat tonnes of junk food and watch all my favourite creepy/spooky or simply Halloweeny movies. Plus let’s say it, it’s great to avoid people and not have to be sociable from time to time:

Here’s a list of the movies you MUST see to get in the right mindset for the best night of the year! I’ve tried to keep the list mixed, with a variety of horror movies, animations, comedy horror etc.

The Shining (1980)

The Shining, a film based on Stephen King’s horror novel is simply a masterpiece – I’m sure I don’t need to sell it to you! And any occasion is good to re-watch this Stanley Kubrick wonder featuring an outstanding Jack Nicholson and a series of creepy scenes that are simply perfect to get you into Spooky Mood – Room 237, the Grady daughters, Danny and his tricycle are waiting for you at the Overlook Hotel.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Who said that Halloween movies have to be scary and bloody forcing you to sleep with the light on for a week??? You can get in the perfect Halloween spirit with something light and funny like Hocus Pocus. Of one thing we’re sure – this Disney classic featuring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as The Sanderson sisters is going to make you laugh!

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

I used to be terrified of this movie growing up – and even if I’ve seen it a few times in the years I “watched” most of it hiding behind a pillow. I think this year is going to be easier to watch this Wes Craven classic (and enjoy the short appearance of Johnny Depp) thanks to Rick and Morty! I can’t un-see Scary Terry now – “You can run but you can’t hide, bi***!”. Sorry Freddy Krueger.

Check our A Nightmare on Elm Street merch here.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Like every good little Goth growing up I must have watched this Tim Burton classic at least 784837 times!
At some point I had a DVD that gave me the option of changing the language and I remember watching it in Italian, Spanish and French out of curiosity to see if the songs sounded better (the Italian ones are pretty cool, sang by an Italian singer called Renato Zero who looks just like Professor Snape! Google it if you don’t trust me).

But the best version of the song ‘This is Halloween’ is not in Italian, Spanish or French. And it’s not even the original… it’s this awesome cover by Marilyn Manson taken from the album Nightmare Revisited.

Check our The Nightmare Before Christmas merch here.

The Addams Family (1991)

There are many reasons why I LOVE this movie: it’s extremely funny thanks to its dark humour, Angelica Huston as Morticia Addams and Christina Ricci’s Wednesday simply mirror exactly how I feel towards people 98% of the time and gifted the world with meme material for the rest of our lives. You’re welcome, Internet.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Oh dear Tim Burton, thank you for this movie! It’s simply one of the greatest movies of all time.
Did you know that Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp were happily engaged at the time they were filming this movie? That probably helped portraying the love and connection between Edward and Kim.
Also, am I the only one that is still upset about these two breaking up?!? #WinonaForever.

Coraline (2009)

Simply a great movie – brilliant soundtrack, bizarre characters, interesting story and creepy villain… the perfect recipe for a Halloweeny movie.

I’ve dressed up as the Coraline doll a few times for Halloween – any excuse to wear a yellow raincoat!

Casper (1995)

Do I need to say spoiler alert if I talk about the ending of a movie that came out 24 years ago? I will just in case – ***SPOILER ALERT***

Ok, let’s talk! Casper shouldn’t be a kids’ movie, kids’ movies should have a happy ending right? This is like if in Beauty and the Beast the Beast dies despite Belle crying and saying she loves him. Not cool. Not cool…

But still, a classic and a must see this Halloween. Just keep some tissues nearby.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Growing up I was TERRIFIED of clowns thanks to my older brother who let me watch IT with him when I was only 5 years old – thanks bro! Even now I’m still scared of clowns but I got over how terrifying Pennywise the Dancing Clown is thanks to The Rocky Horror Picture Show! To see Tim Curry (aka Pennywise in the original IT movie) dancing and singing in fishnet tights and heels as Dr. Frank-N-Furter made it impossible for me to take Pennywise seriously again.

This cult classic is a must see, not scary, but great fun!

Check our IT – The Movie merch here.

The Exorcist (1973)

Absolutely terrifying, still makes me jump despite how many times I’ve seen it.
Even scarier when you find out it’s based on real life events and start reading all the urban legends about the set and the movie itself being cursed

Beetlejuice (1988)

Once again thank you Tim Burton for another brilliant movie! Beetlejuice turned 30 last year and it’s still a must see! And what a cast: Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O’Hara (the mum from Home Alone in case you didn’t know) and Winona Ryder as Lydia are simply amazing! And it gives us so many ideas for Halloween costumes

Check our Beetlejuice merch here.

Donnie Darko (2001):

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies of all time! And my huge crush on Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t even play a part in rating this movie so highly! It’s simply brilliant… From the film’s story to its incredible soundtrack, cast and acting.

And the list could go on and on… Just to name a few:
Carrie (1976) or the remake from 2013
The Craft (1996)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Halloween (1978)
Corpse Bride (2005)
Ghostbusters (1984)
ParaNorman (2012)
Poltergeist (1982)
Scream (1996)
Practical Magic (1998)
Friday the 13th
(1980)
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Frankenweenie (2012)

And without forgetting all the James Wan movies like The Nun, The Conjuring 1 & 2, Insidious 1, 2 & 3, Annabelle 1 & 2, Lights Out and all the Saw films. This man is an evil genius!

What about you? What are your must-see movies to watch in the run-up to Halloween?
We haven’t listed them? Comment below.

Popcorn ready? Have you checked under the bed and in the wardrobe? Everything clear?

Gift ideas for a TV series and movie addict!

Finding Xmas presents for your friends and loved ones can be a pain sometimes and the risk of getting stressed out and gradually turning into The Grinch is pretty high! And that would suck as you’d be killing the Christmas spirit… kind of defeating the whole purpose of getting gifts in the first place right?!? It should be a pleasure and a way to show your dear ones that you care and thought about them – not a dreadful task you can’t wait to get done with.

Luckily if you’re looking for the perfect gift for a TV series and movie lover, the hunt for it could be easier than you think (and quite fun thanks to the variety of fan merch that exists out there…)

My personal suggestion is not to stress worrying about sizes or “right fits” and to play it safe with these (and more) homeware gift ideas for a TV show and Film nerd – including Funko POP!s, home decorations, posters, doormats, pillows, lamps, accessories and MORE!

I’ve picked a selection of my favourite items from some of the cult TV programs and big screen classics and must sees!

Let’s start with gift ideas for a TV series addict:

STRANGER THINGS

The trailer for Stranger Things S3 went live a few days ago and we know that “in the summer of 1985, the adventure continues” – but here we literally can’t wait for summer 2019 to see what’s happening next to Eleven and the rest of the Hawkins’ gang.

This Xmas you can ease the pain of the wait for a Stranger Things fan by gifting them one of the following items/must haves:

Demogorgon (chase edition possible) Funko POP – Vinyl figure 428 / Damn Good Babysitter – Steve Harrington poster / Steve with bandana Funko POP – Vinyl Figure 642

Coffee and Contemplation mug / Stranger Things: Music from the Neftlix Original Series – Vinyl (2 LP) / Friends don’t lie mug

THE WALKING DEAD

The Walking Dead is one of those TV series that you either LOVE or HATE and don’t want to invest time on.

I am personally fully addicted to it and I’ve been faithful to the show despite the ups and downs of some episodes/seasons and the fact that they keep killing all my favourite characters 🙁 (even if they’re alive and well in the comics – RIP Carl).

If you know someone who’s as passionate about this show as me these items are going to make a killer present:

Negan’s Lucille – take it like a champ baseball bat / TWD Monopoly
Negan & Rick blanket / Walker Hand mug

SUPERNATURAL

Supernatural is a GREAT show. No wonder it’s still going after 14 seasons (yeah FOURTEEN – not a typo instead of a 4 or a 10). The recipe of the show includes all you need for it to be a success: humour, drama, intensity, passion, suspense and just to make everything even better it has 2 extremely handsome main characters (raise your hand if you have a crush on Dean Winchester <3)… Supernatural just has it all!

So if you’re looking for a gift for a fan of the Winchester brothers’ adventures you’re in the right place:

Sam and Dean – heat change mug / Anti Possession – Set of 2 pillow cases
Supernatural – slippers / Castiel – stuffed figurine

FRIENDS

Possibly one of the funniest TV series EVER, FRIENDS is an absolute evergreen – and thanks to Netflix and the 90s nostalgia there’s now a huge hype around it, giving us the chance to put our hands on some great merch!

Show your friends that you’re always there for them with one of these awesome presents:

Joey Tribbiani Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 701 / How you doin’? – mugFriends logo – socks

GAME OF THRONES

So, winter is here… but ironically we have to wait until April 2019 for the final season of GOT! Whether your friend is rooting for house Stark, Targaryen, Lannister or Tyrell (or the Night King… why not?) to be sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of everything, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect gift for them here. Just a little something to help them get through winter and keep the hype up until the long awaited S9XE01 airs:

House Stark – Baking Mould / House Targaryen mug / Night’s Watch beer jug
Stark, Targaryen, Lannister, Tyrell sigils shot glasses set

RICK AND MORTY

Rick and Morty is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and yet brilliant TV series out there – big fan! Extremely clever in its borderline nonsense, Rick and Morty gives space and freedom to a huge selection of crazy and outrageous merchandise.

If your friend or loved one has picked up lots of random catch phrases like “it’s time to get schwifty” or “wubba lubba dub dub” or “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, biatch!” or they keep screaming “Pickle RIIIIIIICK” – then you have no choice but to get them a Rick and Morty Xmas gift, whether it makes sense to you or not:

Portal blanket / Get Swhwifty door mat / Get Schwifty hip flask
Pickle Rick Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 333 / Meeseeks – Gift Box

You can find more TV series merch here – including great series like Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, Outlanders, Riverdale, Sons of Anarchy, Star Trek Discovery etc.

Not so much into TV series? No problem, let’s talk about some of the most popular movies out there!

THE LORD OF THE RINGS

One of my favourite film series without question is The Lord of the Rings – thanks J. R. R. Tolkien for writing this masterpiece <3 and to the casting director for picking Orlando Bloom as Legolas!

This Xmas give a precious gift to a Lord of the Rings fan:

One Ring – mug set / You Shall Not Pass – door mat / Elrond Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 635

DEADPOOL

Do I even have to sell it to you? Deadpool is simply brilliant and any fan of the movies/comics surely has a great sense of humour… so why don’t you spice things up a bit and go for a fun gift like one of these? Ryan Reynolds would approve:

Deadpool – wall clock / Deadpool – Camble guy mobile holder / Cheerleader Deadpool Funko POP! – Vinyl figure 325

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Finding a gift for a fan of these brilliant Marvel movies/comics is pretty easy. I’m only going to say one word… GROOT.

No come on, I’m only joking (or am I?)… Our huge Guardians of the Galaxy merch range include other awesome items without solely focusing on the cutest tree ever:

Awesome Mix – door mat / Groot – cable guy mobile holder / Awesome Mix Vol. 2 LP

AQUAMAN

Jason Momoa as Aquaman was surely an interesting casting decision, “slightly” differing from the comic character, but it surely paid off! Surprisingly I don’t see Khal Drogo while looking at Momoa’s great performance and James Wan did an incredible job. It’s been interesting to see him directing something different and stepping away from horror movies for the first time in a while.

A fan on the Aquaman comics and movie (or actor :P) is going to love any of these:

NYCC 2018 – Arhur Curry Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 243 / Aquaman Poster / Aquaman Logo socks

STAR WARS

I’m a BIG Star Wars geek and I love everything Darth Vader – so getting a Xmas present for me is really not that hard (just in case my Secret Santa is reading LOL). We have a HUGE selection of merch that is going to make any fan of the saga happy – whether they’d join the Dark Side or stick with the Jedi.

From adorable (but slightly annoying) Porgs, to all your favourite droids and more:

Darth Vader – A6 notebook / Lenticular Clock /
Yoda neck pillow / Porg oven glove set

You can of course find more movies and film series merch here – including awesome movies like Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, Jurassic Park, The Grinch, IT, Gremlins, Minions, and a HUMONGOUS selection of Disney, DC and Marvel movies…

Marilyn Manson – “Heaven Upside Down” Reviewed

Everyone’s favourite shock-rocker is back, with a clutch of new songs that will neither surprise nor disappoint long-term fans. Marilyn Manson’s latest album, Heaven Upside Down, was originally scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day earlier this year, so it’s been a long wait for those of us hungry for a new slice of industrially-tinged sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

After close to three decades of shocking parents and teachers, Marilyn (real name Brian Warner) shows no signs of settling down with a pair of slippers and a cup of tea quite yet. With his usual smudged eyeliner and oiled-back hair firmly in place, Manson snarls and hisses with the same mixture of sneering detachment and distaste for the mainstream throughout the ten new tracks. The good (or bad) news, depending on how you see it, is that not much has changed here. Manson still combines whispers, harsh and clean vocals more seamlessly than the countless copycats he’s spawned during his reign. The subject matter still encompasses sex, drugs, murder and anti-conventionalism, and the music still pulses with the bassline of an underground club and the riffs of a band that know how to meld metal and electronic music in their sleep.

None of that’s to say that things are getting boring, though. If you’re a Manson fan, there’s plenty to get your teeth into. ‘Say 10’ (the original title of the album) channels Nine Inch Nails for a whispery industrial track that creeps along at a slow and menacing pace towards a typically irreverent chorus that riffs off his image as a kind of tongue-in-cheek antichrist for the modern era. ‘Revelation 12’ brings in some faster and more aggressive guitars that leave you wondering whether to dance or smash things, whilst Manson’s trademark drawl receives a distorted overlay that threatens to bring the tune into EBM territory. My personal pick from the album.

As fans of classic Manson know, the band does danceable grooves just as well as it does buzzing, distorted riffs, as evidenced more than satisfactorily by ‘Tattooed in Reverse’ and the melodic yet creepy ‘Kill4Me’, slower yet no less catchy. Some of these songs will be stuck in your head by the time you’ve finished listening, just to warn you.

In his own words, Manson intended the album to ‘f*** sh** up’ rather than change the world, and this is pretty much the effect he has achieved. Over a long career, Manson has already said everything he needs to say, kicked over as many cultural icons as he possibly can and shocked everyone who needs to be shocked. Now it’s time not to sit back and relax but to bring together all the best bits of the band’s sound and enjoy the madness. A lot of the swearing, subversion and Satanic imagery are still there, but they’re more like a part of the scenery for one really f***ed up party. Marilyn Manson won’t ever go back to the heady heights of Antichrist Superstar or Mechanical Animals, but that’s no reason not to crank this one up and enjoy!

Marilyn Manson are supporting the album with an extensive Europe-wide tour, ending up in the UK in December despite Manson’s close encounter with a gun-shaped prop in a recent show, which he is said to be recovering well from.Check out the album, pick up some merch and we’ll see you at one of his shows in the near future!

“Doctor Who”: Jodie Whittaker is the Thirteenth Doctor!

Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor

TV history was made last night as Jodie Whittaker was announced as Doctor Who’s Thirteenth Doctor, the first woman to take on the titular role in the show’s nearly fifty-four-year history.

The former Broadchurch star said of being awarded the role:

“…this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings – what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role.”

The Thirteenth Doctor will most likely first appear at the climax of “Twice Upon A Time”, the upcoming Christmas special, which will see the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) come face-to-face with his first incarnation (David Bradley, taking over from the late William Hartnell) as he tries to fend off his latest regeneration.

Series Eleven of the revived Doctor Who – the first for new executive producer Chris Chibnall and new Doctor Whittaker – is scheduled to begin next Spring. In the meantime, check out our Doctor Who merchandise section for a range of galactic goodies from the first twelve Doctors. You never know when the Thirteenth will materialise in the shop, so stay tuned!
