Gift Ideas for a Superhero Fan! (Or a Supervillain fan – who are we to judge?)

As a kid, I remember my dream job was “Spider-Man”. Some wanted to be police officers, other wanted to be lawyers or doctors, and some wanted to be marine biologists specialized in whale migration. But whenever the teacher asked: “What do you wanna be when you grow up, Alex?” I would always answer with confidence and self-assurance: “superhero”.  I wanted to be a mutated combination of Spider-man and Super-Man. I don’t really know why, I guess I was extremely power hungry at 8 and wanted to rule the schoolyard with an iron fist spreading fear into my enemies, or more likely I just wanted to have awesome abilities. Unfortunately, for every year that passes, it seems less and less likely that I will get bitten by a radioactive spider, be called upon by a magic ring, or in the case of Marvel hero “Free Spirit”, getting exposed to radioactive self-help tapes (seriously, google it.) Yeah, I suppose, I have to fall back on my backup plan: getting called to Hogwarts and become the next teacher in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Well, since I am Scandinavian my local school would be Durmstrang and I am honestly okay with that too.

In the meantime though, one of the muggle traditions is Christmas, and that means Christmas presents. If you know someone who also has a dream of getting superpowers but you aren’t able to give them super-speed or the ability to create shockwaves equal to their blood alcohol content (again not kidding, Google “Gin Genie”), then I understand your conundrum. But relax, ya boi Alex got the next best things, so get a cup of hot chocolate, lean back and enjoy:

Alex’s 7 best gift ideas for a superhero/supervillain fan! ™

Number 1: Batman bathrobe

Sometimes after a long day of locking up The Joker or getting into a battle of wits with The Riddler, even Batman likes to relax, and I like to imagine that his ego is so big that he wears a robe with the famous bat symbol on its back, and a cool bat hood in case he needs to get up in a hurry. The robe is super comfortable and is perfect for those lazy mornings. Throw in some of our Batman slippers, and you will never want to wear anything else. It’s literally the perfect bathrobe, or should I say “batrobe”?

Number 2:  Spider Gwen zipped hoodie

Spider Gwen came onto the superhero stage fairly recently making her debut in the excellent 2014 Spiderverse storyline. Spider-Gwen explores an alternative universe where Peter Parker’s tragic love-interest Gwen Stacy gets bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter, turning her into Spider-Woman. I remember when I first got introduced to her I immediately loved her; she is cool, plays drums in “The Mary Janes”, her costume design is amazing and the plots are intriguing. Goes without saying that she has become one of my personal favorite heroes, and therefore I love this hoodie. Spider-Gwen’s unique costume has made reoccurring appearances on multiple Comic-Cons with good reason it has a brilliant pink/white color scheme that looks extremely cool, and with the animated film “Into The Spider-verse” hitting the cinema December 12th, she is guaranteed to just keep surging in popularity.

Number 3: Aquaman Leather Jacket

Unless you have been living under a rock, or have seriously no interest in superheroes (in that case I wonder how you ended up here? And how is the internet connection under that rock?) you know that DC’s the Aquaman movie is out in December, showing the story and royal lineage of the often misunderstood Arthur Curry. Aquaman has often been represented by media as the boring useless hero, but he is really awesome! And so is this jacket! Surprisingly well-made, and stylish. The Aquaman logo is there but floats perfectly into the rest of the design. People outside the superhero/nerd world wouldn’t even think twice if they saw it. Unfortunately, it’s not vegan leather… but nevertheless a cool jacket that I personally love.

Number 4: Deadpool Dirty Door Mat

Deadpool used to be an obscure wisecracking merch up until Ryan Reynolds leaked… I mean someone else we obviously don’t know who… leaked the Deadpool test-footage 4 years ago and he has since become a hilarious household name. His movies have become huge successes even with a PG-13 edited version of “Deadpool 2”  “Once Upon A Deadpool” hitting cinemas December 12th. I might not be as brutal as the original but I am sure it will be a blast regardless considering DP’s quick wits. And quick wit is what you also get with this doormat, who welcomes your guests in the best way possible, while reminding them to wipe their feet.

Number 5: Sane & Crazy Harley Quinn Hoodie

Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, better known as The Jokers partner in crime “Harley Quinn”,  is a villain I’ve never felt gets enough justice in the movies: in reality (well comics) she is hilarious, her story is heart aching, a great fighter and capable of impressive acrobatics. She is so much more than DC’s less known clown and that’s why I love her. This zip hoodie has got an awesome “Skull Harley” design and have clearly taken inspiration from an Ouija board creating this “Cool girl look”. I think it looks awesome. If you don’t then fine – I am not your supervisor and you just have to live with being wrong.

Number 6: Black Metal Rocket T-shirt

If someone said to me in 2012 that Guardians Of The Galaxy would be a major blockbuster, I would get them thrown into a mental institution for severe disillusions… but here we are! The movies are truly great; they are actually so great that they changed the comics. Peter Quill in the original Guardians Of The Galaxy was not the wisecracking vagabond we know today. But after the success of Chris Pratt’s portrayal they changed him to be more familiar to new readers, and honestly it was a welcomed change. My personal favorite on the crew, however, is Rocket, the destructive rodent voiced by Bradley Cooper fills my heart with joy. And so does this black metal inspired T-shirt that fills in the gap between Black metal logos and Marvel merch, and it works way better than it probably should.

Number 7: Captain America Christmas Jumper

No Christmas list would be complete without an ugly Christmas Jumpers, and to be honest I never liked Captain America when he was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but he has really grown on me and as a consequence so has this jumper. I love the color scheme and the small “8-bit” Steve Rogers dancing around the entire jumper ready for battle with his shield. Perfect for that lazy boxing day, where all you wanna do is lay down and digest food.

So there you have it! My personal 7 recommendations for stuff you can pick up for your friendly neighborhood superhero fan. It isn’t as good as the ability to eat almost any matter regardless of form (once again, no joke… “Matter-eater lad”) but it helps to fill the void. Now I am back to waiting for my summoning to the Durmstrang Institute but until then I will be enjoying muggle traditions and I hope that you will too. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

P.S: If anyone knows where I can get a radioactive spider I would much appreciate a heads-up.

EMP’s Alternative Christmas Gift Guide

So it’s that time of year again… I’m not talking about the time for mulled wine, Wham! on repeat and dying of heat stroke on the train from too many layers. No, I’m talking about the time where you have the agonising thought of finding the perfect gift for your family. You start analysing their personality and spying on their things to find out what they don’t have that they should have – basically turning into a bit of a stalker. Well, call me Santa because all your wishes for answers are right here in my sack (or blog post).

Gifts for Mum

Lets kick things off with one of the hardest people to buy for. Think outside the box of perfume or scented candle and get her something that really shows you’ve put some thought into it – like this Groot handbag (B), a pretty present for any Guardians of the Galaxy fan. Every woman’s bag needs a mirror and this rose gold Aladdin pocket mirror (A) one is destined to be a winner.

The way to any Mum’s heart is through tea so give Mrs Potts and Chip a day off and get this magical tea pot and mug (C) to make Mum feel like the most special guest. Or maybe she’s a Game of Thrones fan and this House Targaryen pillow (D) is just what she needs to add a touch of royalty to the living room.

Gifts for Dad

Now I know all Dad’s love a pair of socks but he only has two feet (and he’s still getting through his birthday socks). Get him something a little different like this awesome Star Wars Cantina Band On Tour t-shirt (B).

Or get him something he can use every day and put some force into Dad’s day with this awesome Darth Vader mug (A) or warm him up in the winter breeze with this House Stark Cup (E).

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas if it didn’t involve Dad trying to get everyone involved in a game in the evening – this amazing Great Hall puzzle (D) is perfect for that or challenge him one on one with Laser Tag (C). If these games arn’t his thing, we have plenty more board games and puzzles to choose from!

Gifts for Brother

Christmas is the time of year when you gotta take a break from winding each other up and appreciate each other…

Thank god that’s over. Now onto what you could give your bro (other than a kick under the table). This ultra-cosy Batman dressing gown (E) is just what any DC fan needs this time of year to wrap up and get cosy (or hang it on the back of your head and pretend it’s a cape – we won’t judge!)

Or is he a Walking Dead fan but too cool for a Christmas jumper? Get your brother this sick Have a Smashing Holiday t shirt (C). If Game of Thrones is his series, this awesome I Drink and I Know Things t-shirt (A) is bound to be a hit.

Get schwifty in this I’m Pickle Rick jumper (D) – it’s a must for any Rick and Morty fan this Christmas! For any gamers, this Call of Duty wallet (B) is the perfect place for him to keep all the gaming gift cards he’s gonna get for Xmas.

Gifts for Sister

So let’s face it, most of us have a love hate relationship with our sibling so this cute Stay Weird Alice in Wonderland top (D) is a perfect tongue in cheek gift. If the season of goodwill has got to you, show her she’s the rose between two thrones with this delicate Beauty and the Beast necklace (C).

Bring out her dark side (the side that used to hit you when your mum wasn’t looking) with this awesome Villain hairbrush (E) or these Nightmare Before Christmas PJ’s (F) (even though she might be a nightmare all the time – not just before Christmas!). We’ve got lots more Disney merch waiting for you!

Maybe Harry Potter is her love? This Letter From Hogwarts clutch bag (A) is an amazing addition to any night out! As well as this Deathly Hallow’s black and gold bracelet (B)– that we know you’ll just buy so you can borrow it.

Gifts for anyone!

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a family game of something to add to the festivities and The Walking Dead themed Monopoly (A) is just the game to get everyone involved. And when you’re tired out from all the fun, this ACDC blanket (B) is the perfect addition to the sofa to make cosying up that bit more Rock’n’Roll.

When it comes to Funko Pop’s, there’s figures for so many types of people that you won’t be able to make your mind up! A good place to start is with these guys: Kromopulos Michael (C), Boggart as Snape (D) and Balrog (E) – all beautiful in their own way and great gifts for all different kinds of fans! Check out our full range of Funko Pops.

At EMP, we have something for everyone. If you can’t find the perfect gift in this list, it’s waiting for you somewhere on our website!

The 10 Most Exciting Announcements from D23 and San Diego Comic-Con 2017

Well, it’s been a pretty big couple of weeks for film fans, with Disney’s D23 Expo and the San Diego Comic-Con showing us what we can expect from our favourite franchises over the next few years.

And, as expected, Disney, LucasFilm, Marvel and Pixar made a lot of big announcements, from new film projects and casting reveals to teaser trailers and theme park plans.

Here’s a round-up of the 10 most exciting things we saw from this year’s D23 Expo and ComicCon.

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers Infinity War logoOf all the things we saw from D23 and ComicCon, this could be the one we’re most excited about.

Marvel fans were treated to a 4-minute teaser from the much-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War at the end of the D23 Expo.

The clip began with the Guardians of the Galaxy running into Thor against a backdrop of cosmic carnage. This was followed by snippets of what appeared to be an epic battle between the Avengers and Thanos.

Other important details to note? It looks like Captain America now has a beard and Black Widow has gone blonde.

Can’t wait for Avengers: Infinity War? Show your support for the team by checking out our Avengers merchandise as well as the individual ranges for Captain America, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Ant-Man. Did we forget anybody?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

A Porg. ©Disney

Director Rian Johnson took the stage at D23 along with Star Wars cast members Daisy Ridley, Benicio Del Toro, Gwendoline Christie and Laura Dern to talk about the next instalment in the saga.

And although we didn’t get any new plot details, they did show a behind-the-scenes featurette that hinted at what may be in store, including a terrifying wolf-like creature and an adorable critter apparently known as a Porg. N’aww!

The footage ended with a clip of the late Carrie Fisher, who spoke movingly about what it meant to her to work on The Last Jedi. “(This film) is about family,” she said. “That’s what so powerful about it.”

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

The full gamut of Disney princesses will be characters in the second Wreck-It Ralph. © Disney

We also got loads more details about the upcoming sequel to Wreck-It Ralph. In Ralph Breaks the Internet, the title character and his best friend, Vanellope, escape the arcade and enter the Internet to find a fix for the Sugar Rush game.

During their quest, they meet a few new characters, as well as familiar faces from LucasFilm and Marvel along with all of the Disney princesses. Yup, that’s right. All of them. And with many of the original actresses reprising their roles, we really can’t wait to see it.

Want to dress like a Disney princess? Then check out our full range of Disney merchandise, including stunning replica dresses from Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan and more!

Live-action Aladdin

These guys will soon be getting a live-action makeover. © Disney

Following the success of Beauty and the Beast, Disney are following up with a live-action, Guy Ritchie-directed Aladdin remake. And at D23, it was announced that Mena Massoud has been cast as the title role, while Naomi Scott has been chosen to play Jasmine.

Will Smith has been chosen to take on the iconic role of the Genie, which was of course played by the late Robin Williams in the original animated movie.

What would you ask the Genie for? How about an Aladdin’s Cave of Aladdin merchandise?

Kingdom Hearts 3

D23 also gave us a sneak peek at the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3. And from what we could tell, it will definitely be worth the wait.

Set for release sometime in 2018, the third major instalment in the Final Fantasy/Disney crossover will see Sora and pals Donald and Goofy team up with Toy Story favourites Buzz Lightyear and Woody.

With the long-awaited third instalment just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to grab some Kingdom Hearts merchandise!

Stranger Things Season 2

There’s something strange in the neighbourhood AGAIN in “Stranger Things” S2…© Netflix

The first series of Stranger Things was a smash, so expectations for the second are huge. Fortunately, the trailer dropped by Netflix during SDCC hit the spot and hinted at a host of new twists and turns.

Enter the Upside Down world of our Stranger Things merchandise, featuring Funko Pop! figures of all of your favourite characters!

Mary Poppins Returns

We literally could not be more excited about next year’s sequel to the 1964 classic. And judging by the exclusive clip shown at D23, it promises to be all we’ve hoped for and more.

The teaser showed Emily Blunt as the title character flying in with her umbrella. We also saw kite-flying, character shots and Dick Van Dyke dancing on a table. It really does look practically perfect in the most delightful way.

Star Wars Land – coming to Walt Disney World

Concept art for the “Galaxy’s Edge” theme park. © Disney

It’s no secret that a new Star Wars-themed land is coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 2019. But, we found out much more about it at D23.

The new area is going to be called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and will be set on a remote planet during the war between the First Order and the Resistance. Attractions will include a trip in the Millennium Falcon and a ride that will put you right at the centre of a huge battle between the two sides.

Galaxy’s Edge is said to be a “fully immersive” experience, and apparently, the decisions you make there will affect you elsewhere in the park.

And as if this wasn’t cool enough, Disney also announced plans for a Star Wars hotel, where each guest will apparently experience a completely unique story during their stay. You’ll get to dress up in Star Wars clothing and explore the alien-filled hotel, which will look like a starship. And when you look out the window? Instead of seeing Florida sunshine, you’ll see outer-space.

Planning a visit to Galaxy’s Edge? You’ll need to stock up on Star Wars merchandise!

<h2Captain Marvel

Guys, it’s happening!!!! #captainmarvel #sdcc2017

A post shared by Brie (@brielarson) on

Although Captain Marvel hasn’t even begun filming yet, we did manage to get a couple of very important details from SDCC – including our first look at Brie Larson as the titular Captain in costume (above).

Director Kevin Feige confirmed that the film will be set in the 1990s. Samuel L Jackson will be returning as Nick Fury, although the film is set before he lost his eye – so we’ll get to see Fury sans eyepatch.

Doctor Who Christmas Special

First and Twelfth Doctors

Twelve meets One before becoming Thirteen in the “Doctor Who” Christmas special, which we now know is titled “Twice Upon A Time”. © BBC

Emotions were high as Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat, Michelle Gomez and Pearl Mackie manned the stage for their final SDCC panel as the current torch-bearers for Doctor Who.

They treated us to our first trailer for the upcoming Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time, which will see David Bradley play the original Doctor in place of the late William Hartnell – and the physical and vocal resemblance is uncanny.

Say goodbye to Doctor Twelve with something from our range of Doctor Who merchandise!

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks for big announcements and entertainment expos. The next to come up is London Film & Comic Con, where you can meet the EMP crew! Come check out the EMP stall where we’ll be selling merch and giving away awesome prizes and freebies!

Breaking Down the New “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” Trailer

I am Groot! I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot I am Groot I am Groot I am Groot. I am Groot! I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot! I am Groot. I am GrootI am Groot. I am Groot! I am Groot, I am Groot. I am Groot…I am Groot!

With just a few short weeks to go until release, Marvel have treated us to our third sneak peek at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Shall we suck all of the fun out of that trailer with a frame-by-frame breakdown of what we were shown? What else are movie trailers for?

© Marvel

© Marvel

We open with the same battle we’ve seen in the other trailers, but I’m lucky enough to have quite a high tolerance for former wrestling champs throwing themselves down Abilisk throats. As always, Drax does so with a throaty laugh.

And here’s the trailer’s first proper glimpse at Baby Groot! All together now: n’awwww…

© Marvel

© Marvel

This cheerful-looking bunch are the Sovereign. “I see it within you – fear. Jealousy. Betrayal. It is our job to cleanse the universe of this weakness”, says Ayesha, their High Priestess…

…which looks like precisely the kind of thing they’re up to a few frames later in the trailer…

…which is possibly why Star-Lord’s trying to make a speedy getaway here. “Groot, put your seatbelt on!” he cries.

But ickle Groot is too busy chowing down on sweets. Now, what are these? Skittles? M&Ms? Smarties? And is that the same pot he was dancing in one movie ago? And what happens when you don’t put your seatbelt on, young man?

Bad things like this happen. Let’s hope something soft breaks Groot’s fall…

Earlier in the trailer, we saw Yondu and his Ravagers looking like they’d finally managed to corner Rocket. Here, it looks like Rocket’s turned the tables with a trap. I’ve used this image to illustrate it because there’s nothing better than capturing the precise moment somebody’s thinking “ooooh, shi-“

© Marvel

“So we’re saving the galaxy again? Awesome! We’re really gonna be able to jack up our prices if we’re two-time galaxy savers!” Rocket’s seeing dollar signs…

…and so is Drax.

© Marvel

© Marvel

Gamora and Star-Lord are getting close here. And where are they? This environment all looks very utopian – could they be on the planet of the gold gang, the Sovereign?

© Marvel

© Marvel

“Die, spaceship!” roars Drax here, seemingly whilst covered in bubble wrap.

Every Groot appearance in the trailer seems to be cuter than the last. Here, he thinks nothing of giving Gamora a nice wave mid-fight with the Abilisk…

…and look closely here and you’ll see him perched on the shoulder of Yondu, a Ravager earlier in the trailer but seemingly now a fully-fledged Guardian as he sends space villains flying all around him.

Seems that Nebula’s not quite ready to sign up, though. Here she’s going after her dear adopted sister – and has she hijacked the Guardians’ ship?

© Marvel

© Marvel

We’re back on the same sumptuous-looking world that Star-Lord and Gamora looked like they were having some time to themselves on earlier. Is it the Sovereign homeworld? Or perhaps it’s…

© Marvel

© Marvel

…a living planet?!?! The trailer’s zOMFGGG moment comes when the gang (with Nebula in tow – perhaps she does make nice with her sis after all) come into contact with this mysterious chap played by Kurt Russell, who announces “I’m your dad, Peter.” We know from the comics that this is Ego, a living planet who is indeed Star-Lord’s pops. Marvel have said that Ego doesn’t appear in his planetary form in the movie, but do you really introduce a character who’s a living planet without actually showing, yannow, that living planet form?

We’ve only got to wait until April 28th to find out!
