The 5 Best Superhero Movies

When I grew up superhero movies weren’t something to be excited about. Most of them were mediocre at best and  “X-Men: The Last Stand” at worse – a movie so bad that 20th Century Fox decided to make “Days Of Future Past” a good movie that basically exists to erase the events of a bad movie.

But, around 2008 something changed in the genre. It became good. Suddenly the movies weren’t all about overused tropes and too tight costumes with clearly visible Clooney nipples. Suddenly they started asking real questions and portrayed real characters with real flaws.

Tony Stark used to be an arms dealer with questionable morals building his fortune on the misery of war. Bruce Wayne had to face the concept of nihilism and The Joker actually had a point in his idea that if we take away a human’s comfort, they basically turn into wild animals. It was a massive step up from Toby Maguire’s dance in Spider-Man 3.

So with Marvel Comic’s 10-year anniversary officially over we felt it was a good time to take a retrospective look over the movies we’ve enjoyed the last decade.

These are my favourites and of course, my list is the objective truth. If you disagree let’s talk about it. Leave a comment somewhere and I will explain why you are wrong.

WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS! IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE ON THE LIST GO WATCH AND COME BACK! GOOD? GOOD! LET’S DO THIS!

Number 5: “Deadpool” (2016)

(Photo: www.telegraph.co.uk)

Finding the number 5 spot was arguably more difficult than the number 1 spot considering my massive man-crush on Ryan Reynolds and the fact that I have probably read Deadpool comics for 15 years. The movie shows amazing chemistry between Wade Wilson and Vanessa and the jokes are funny and hit 90% of the times. It showed you don’t need a huge budget for a great film and the passion behind the project is obvious.

However, the reason why I put it at number 5 is that even though the movie is amazing, it doesn’t work by itself. It serves as a massive satire of the superhero genre which only works due to the massive saturation of the genre. The movie feels like an inside joke in the ways it pokes fun of Green Lantern and licencing issues between studios jokes that you only pick up if you are “in the know” in the superhero universe. My dad with no relationship to superhero movies would not enjoy the film the same way I would.

It is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen and it was a massive breath of fresh air; it was just that, a breath of fresh air. It is the mate you hang out with once a year and have a great time with but if you were to hang out with him more it would lose a lot of the magic. And that’s why I put it at number 5. Still amazing, just not the best of the best. (Sorry Ryan, please respond to my love letters)

Number 4: “The Dark Knight” (2008)

(Photo: www.variety.com)

Another one that is probably one of my favourite movies of all time. The late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the psychotic clown, prince of crime has made it into a modern classic. Its theme of order vs chaos is both interesting and thought-provoking.

What makes the movie interesting though is that Batman is not a hero; he is a necessary evil. Bruce Wayne really wants to be replaced by Harvey Dent – someone that can create real societal change in the dark pit of corruption and debauchery that Gotham City is. Wayne’s perfect world is one where he is not needed and it is a goal he actively seeks out to achieve and I feel that is an idea not widely explored in superhero movies. And of course Michael Caine as Alfred is amazing: I cried extremely manly tears during the “I failed you” speech in the sequel “The Dark Knight Rises”.

Number 3: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

(Photo: www.whats-on-netflix.com)

The movie was just released but man, what a movie. A lot of charm, hilarious jokes and great animation. It also featured the movie debut of fan favourites Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen.

When I first saw the trailer I was a bit sceptical to the animation style, but it really does work and the movie ended up being both hilarious and heart-wrenching. Nicholas Cage as Spider-noir quickly became a favourite and I still burst out randomly overly dramatic quotes in the office: “Wherever I go, the wind follows…. and the wind smells like rain”.

The trailers also did a brilliant job hiding the reveals. I genuinely did not see the Doc Ock reveal coming and let out an audible “no way” in the theatre. John Mulaney does a surprisingly good job as Peter Porker – a character that proved to be more than just comic relief.

Number 2: Wonder Woman (2017)

(Photo: www.vox.com)

A movie that really surprised me was “Wonder Woman”. I recently re-watched the film to try to figure why a movie featuring an Amazon coming to Europe during the worst conflict in human history ended up blowing me away like that. I think a lot of it comes down to the movie asking the question “is humanity essentially good or evil”?

There is one scene in the movie where Diana gets ice cream from a vendor and is so excited about it and tells the owner to be very proud of their creation. There was a genuine wholesomeness where she sees one of the best qualities in humanity: just basic kindness.

But simultaneously it does show the brutal side of humankind with Dr Poison and her gas attacks. Ares explains that humanity is only capable of death and selfishness, yet Steve Trevor sacrifices himself to save London showing that humanity is way more complex. I think the movie’s message is that humanity is imperfect and that makes us perfect. And I love that.

Number 1: Logan (2017)

(Photo: www.livinghours.com)

Wolverine was probably my favorite superhero as a kid and “X-Men” was maybe the first comic I started reading. I always loved his character and I consider X-men 2 one of the few good superhero movies before 2008.

Full disclosure: I have a near and dear relationship to Jackman’s Wolverine and I loved the “Old Man Logan” comics (which the story is loosely inspired by). Yet, I was blown away. I don’t know if I can honestly say it is a superhero movie since (if we are going all movie technical) it checks off more boxes in the western genre. Watch the movie and imagine Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan saying the lines and it still fits.

The movie follows a lone gunslinger (just in this case the guns are claws) that roam around the wilderness just looking for peace after a life of brutality. This Logan isn’t the bulletproof god of X-men origins: this is just a broken dying man driving a fancy Uber so he and his surrogate father Charles that suffers from Alzheimer’s can buy a boat.

The movie portrays Logan as the last of his kind, after most of the others mutants got killed. He is a lonely alcoholic. But after meeting his “daughter” Lauren aka X-23, he does earn a higher purpose even though he originally did it for the money.

The movie isn’t a superhero movie and I guess in some way that’s what makes it such a great superhero movie. It’s less about the greatness of being superhuman and more the realization that nothing last forever; even the greatest stories have to come to an end – regardless of if you have got claws or just normal, boring human hands.

Well there you have it: my top 5 superhero films! What’s your top 5? Add a comment somewhere and I will explain why my list is better!

Have a great week/weekend/year/whatever.

Gift ideas for a TV series and movie addict!

Finding Xmas presents for your friends and loved ones can be a pain sometimes and the risk of getting stressed out and gradually turning into The Grinch is pretty high! And that would suck as you’d be killing the Christmas spirit… kind of defeating the whole purpose of getting gifts in the first place right?!? It should be a pleasure and a way to show your dear ones that you care and thought about them – not a dreadful task you can’t wait to get done with.

Luckily if you’re looking for the perfect gift for a TV series and movie lover, the hunt for it could be easier than you think (and quite fun thanks to the variety of fan merch that exists out there…)

My personal suggestion is not to stress worrying about sizes or “right fits” and to play it safe with these (and more) homeware gift ideas for a TV show and Film nerd – including Funko POP!s, home decorations, posters, doormats, pillows, lamps, accessories and MORE!

I’ve picked a selection of my favourite items from some of the cult TV programs and big screen classics and must sees!

Let’s start with gift ideas for a TV series addict:

STRANGER THINGS

The trailer for Stranger Things S3 went live a few days ago and we know that “in the summer of 1985, the adventure continues” – but here we literally can’t wait for summer 2019 to see what’s happening next to Eleven and the rest of the Hawkins’ gang.

This Xmas you can ease the pain of the wait for a Stranger Things fan by gifting them one of the following items/must haves:

Demogorgon (chase edition possible) Funko POP – Vinyl figure 428 / Damn Good Babysitter – Steve Harrington poster / Steve with bandana Funko POP – Vinyl Figure 642

Coffee and Contemplation mug / Stranger Things: Music from the Neftlix Original Series – Vinyl (2 LP) / Friends don’t lie mug

THE WALKING DEAD

The Walking Dead is one of those TV series that you either LOVE or HATE and don’t want to invest time on.

I am personally fully addicted to it and I’ve been faithful to the show despite the ups and downs of some episodes/seasons and the fact that they keep killing all my favourite characters 🙁 (even if they’re alive and well in the comics – RIP Carl).

If you know someone who’s as passionate about this show as me these items are going to make a killer present:

Negan’s Lucille – take it like a champ baseball bat / TWD Monopoly
Negan & Rick blanket / Walker Hand mug

SUPERNATURAL

Supernatural is a GREAT show. No wonder it’s still going after 14 seasons (yeah FOURTEEN – not a typo instead of a 4 or a 10). The recipe of the show includes all you need for it to be a success: humour, drama, intensity, passion, suspense and just to make everything even better it has 2 extremely handsome main characters (raise your hand if you have a crush on Dean Winchester <3)… Supernatural just has it all!

So if you’re looking for a gift for a fan of the Winchester brothers’ adventures you’re in the right place:

Sam and Dean – heat change mug / Anti Possession – Set of 2 pillow cases
Supernatural – slippers / Castiel – stuffed figurine

FRIENDS

Possibly one of the funniest TV series EVER, FRIENDS is an absolute evergreen – and thanks to Netflix and the 90s nostalgia there’s now a huge hype around it, giving us the chance to put our hands on some great merch!

Show your friends that you’re always there for them with one of these awesome presents:

Joey Tribbiani Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 701 / How you doin’? – mugFriends logo – socks

GAME OF THRONES

So, winter is here… but ironically we have to wait until April 2019 for the final season of GOT! Whether your friend is rooting for house Stark, Targaryen, Lannister or Tyrell (or the Night King… why not?) to be sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of everything, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect gift for them here. Just a little something to help them get through winter and keep the hype up until the long awaited S9XE01 airs:

House Stark – Baking Mould / House Targaryen mug / Night’s Watch beer jug
Stark, Targaryen, Lannister, Tyrell sigils shot glasses set

RICK AND MORTY

Rick and Morty is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and yet brilliant TV series out there – big fan! Extremely clever in its borderline nonsense, Rick and Morty gives space and freedom to a huge selection of crazy and outrageous merchandise.

If your friend or loved one has picked up lots of random catch phrases like “it’s time to get schwifty” or “wubba lubba dub dub” or “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, biatch!” or they keep screaming “Pickle RIIIIIIICK” – then you have no choice but to get them a Rick and Morty Xmas gift, whether it makes sense to you or not:

Portal blanket / Get Swhwifty door mat / Get Schwifty hip flask
Pickle Rick Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 333 / Meeseeks – Gift Box

You can find more TV series merch here – including great series like Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, Outlanders, Riverdale, Sons of Anarchy, Star Trek Discovery etc.

Not so much into TV series? No problem, let’s talk about some of the most popular movies out there!

THE LORD OF THE RINGS

One of my favourite film series without question is The Lord of the Rings – thanks J. R. R. Tolkien for writing this masterpiece <3 and to the casting director for picking Orlando Bloom as Legolas!

This Xmas give a precious gift to a Lord of the Rings fan:

One Ring – mug set / You Shall Not Pass – door mat / Elrond Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 635

DEADPOOL

Do I even have to sell it to you? Deadpool is simply brilliant and any fan of the movies/comics surely has a great sense of humour… so why don’t you spice things up a bit and go for a fun gift like one of these? Ryan Reynolds would approve:

Deadpool – wall clock / Deadpool – Camble guy mobile holder / Cheerleader Deadpool Funko POP! – Vinyl figure 325

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Finding a gift for a fan of these brilliant Marvel movies/comics is pretty easy. I’m only going to say one word… GROOT.

No come on, I’m only joking (or am I?)… Our huge Guardians of the Galaxy merch range include other awesome items without solely focusing on the cutest tree ever:

Awesome Mix – door mat / Groot – cable guy mobile holder / Awesome Mix Vol. 2 LP

AQUAMAN

Jason Momoa as Aquaman was surely an interesting casting decision, “slightly” differing from the comic character, but it surely paid off! Surprisingly I don’t see Khal Drogo while looking at Momoa’s great performance and James Wan did an incredible job. It’s been interesting to see him directing something different and stepping away from horror movies for the first time in a while.

A fan on the Aquaman comics and movie (or actor :P) is going to love any of these:

NYCC 2018 – Arhur Curry Funko POP! – Vinyl Figure 243 / Aquaman Poster / Aquaman Logo socks

STAR WARS

I’m a BIG Star Wars geek and I love everything Darth Vader – so getting a Xmas present for me is really not that hard (just in case my Secret Santa is reading LOL). We have a HUGE selection of merch that is going to make any fan of the saga happy – whether they’d join the Dark Side or stick with the Jedi.

From adorable (but slightly annoying) Porgs, to all your favourite droids and more:

Darth Vader – A6 notebook / Lenticular Clock /
Yoda neck pillow / Porg oven glove set

You can of course find more movies and film series merch here – including awesome movies like Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, Jurassic Park, The Grinch, IT, Gremlins, Minions, and a HUMONGOUS selection of Disney, DC and Marvel movies…

90 Years of Mickey Mouse

Three circles. That’s all it took to start possibly the biggest movement in entertainment history. Adding magic to all of our childhoods and giving the ability to escape to worlds we wish were real in adulthood. That’s right – it’s Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday! An incredible 90 years later and he’s still the most famous mouse in show business.

Where it started

The Mickey Mouse journey started in 1928 when Walt Disney asked animator Ub Iwerks to help him create his first very own character (characters he had created before belonged to Universal). Iwerks created cats, dogs, a cow, a horse and a frog but they were not quite right. Disney decided he wanted a mouse called Mortimer and Iwerks created the simple, three circle design. Walt Disney’s wife convinced him to change the name to Mickey (thank goodness) and that’s when the iconic mouse was born.

Mickey made his debut in the short film Steamboat Willie (grab the Steamboat Willing Funko Pop! here) with Walt Disney as the voice actor who voiced Mickey and Minnie until 1946. It features Mickey sailing a steamboat until Captain Pete takes over. They stop to pick up cargo and Minnie misses the ship. But of course, her hero Mickey picks her up with a crane and puts her on the ship. In the middle of all this excitement, she drops her sheet of music and a goat eats it (don’t you hate it when that happens!?). She yanks the goats tail and it plays the tune. Mickey joins in on percussion and by using various other animals, they create a little band. This scene was actually later removed due to concerns of animal cruelty. Captain Pete then breaks up the party and gets Mickey peeling potatoes. The interesting thing about this film is that although its the first Disney movie with sound, there is no dialog. Give it a watch below.

With hundreds of films being released from then till now, my all time favourite is Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas. If you haven’t seen it, you HAVE to watch it this Christmas. It’s about three toys under a tree and each has a story. One story is about Donald Duck‘s nephews wishing it was Christmas everyday and when their wish comes true, they start to regret their greediness. Another is about Goofy trying too hard to prove to his adolescent son that Santa is in fact real. And the final story is about Mickey and Minnie sacrificing their most prized possessions for each others happiness. That’s the thing about Disney – it’s never just a story. There’s always a lesson to be learned (and a sexual innuendo to spot but those are stories for another blog post).

Mickey didn’t wear his iconic white gloves until the 1929 film The Opry House. Gradually over the years the character evolved into what we know today. He had his ears reshaped until it was decided to keep them circular no matter what way he turned.  He was only given three fingers and a thumb because of financial reasons: not having that extra finger in each of the 45,000 drawings of each short film has saved the studio millions over the years.

Mickey Inspired Art

All of the alterations and quirks has given us our legend that not only inspired us as children, but has had an incredibly powerful influence on the art world: he’s been a popular subject over the decades with artists including Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. Mickey gives artwork a sense of familiarity and establishes an instant connection to the viewer. Feast your eyes on some of the most famous Mickey inspired creations:

Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) Quadrant Mickey Mouse

Damien Hirst – Mickey, 2012

Banksy – Napalm (2004-5)

Ben Allen – Popaganda Mickey

Marilyn Manson – The Golden Age of Grotesque – Helnwein

Roy Lichtenstein – Look Mickey – 1961

1928

When looking back at the influence this event in 1928 has had, we decided to have a look at some other things that happened in 1928 that have had an impact on our lives:

Alexander Fleming discovers Penicillin.

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic as a passenger.

John Logie Baird demonstrates the first colour television transmission in London.

Paul Whiteman and his orchestra record “Ol’ Man River” featuring Bing Crosby.

The 9th Olympics was held in Amsterdam.

Clip-on tie was designed (very important event).

And the most important one… sliced bread was sold for the first time by the Chillicothe Baking Company, Missouri (has there really ever been anything better since sliced bread?)

Anyway, back to 2018… in an era of constantly changing trends and tastes, it’s quite remarkable that Mickey Mouse is still influencing our society as if he were designed last month; let alone 90 years ago. And of course since then, Disney has given us hundreds more characters to enjoy and we can’t wait to see what is created in the next 90 years.

Thank you Walt Disney for creating something so original and extraordinarily timeless.

Solo: A Star Wars Story – Expectations & What We Know

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits the cinemas soon and expectations for this are high. Han is a fan favourite from the Star Wars universe mainly thanks to Harrison Ford’s rebellious swagger but likeable persona throughout the 4 films he was in. When it was announced that there would be a Han Solo movie the reaction was mixed: a lot of people said “how can anyone play Han Solo but Harrison Ford?” He is such an iconic character and whoever takes on the roll has BIG boots to fill.

Enter Alden Ehrenreich, a 28 year old actor from LA who has been chosen to portray Han in the upcoming film. Director, Ron Howard, recently stated that  “It was always clear from the beginning, before I was involved, that it was not going to be an impression of Harrison. No one wanted that. Part of Han Solo’s character is sort of a vibe and a fell and a body language.” So, with that in mind, here is the first teaser that was released:

The story is an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the rebellion. The cast is strong with this one too; other actors involved are Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke who plays “Qi’Ra”, Donald Glover will play “Landon Calrissan” (random fact: Donald made a brief appearance in the most excellent recent Spider-Man: Homecoming movie) and Bill Murrays #1 fan Woody Harrelson plays “Tobias Beckett” plus many many more…. Check out the full trailer:

I’ve watched this trailer like 1000 times; I absolutely LOVE Star Wars and I’m pretty sure that Alden will exceed any expectations, he will own those big boots that he needs to fill  and will deliver an amazing performance of Han Solo and make the character his own. We will find out on May 25th when the film is released in the cinemas and I will be there, watching it on the biggest screen I can find with the loudest speakers blasting at my ears and be fully kitted out in Star Wars merch!

Deadpool 2: What We Know So Far

So it’s been over 2 years since perhaps the cockiest of all Superheroes hit our screen and we’re definitely ready for another dose of raunchy insanity. That’s right, Deadpool 2 is released next month and we can’t wait! But how will they top such a blockbuster hit that took 11 years to make?

Here is the official trailer and what we know so far:

Fox released this synopsis of the movie:

“After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.”

Of course, Deadpool wouldn’t be Deadpool without some crazy ridiculous and slightly offensive teasers: short videos have been released in the run up to the movie enforcing the unique (and a little bit messed up) sense of humour of Deadpool including this Bob Ross parody:

And the jokes keep on coming with Ryan Reynolds posting two variations of Deadpool posters on his Twitter page:

I don’t know about you, but one of the things I love about a new Superhero movie is the new characters. I love the anticipation of finding out what people are going to be dressed up as at the next Comic Con or what new little character we will add to our Funko POP! collection. Here are some of the characters we can look forward to meeting in Deadpool 2:

Cable

Played by Josh Brolin, X-Men character Cable’s Marvel Comics story features him being infected by a virus that is cured by travelling in the future. His powers are telekinesis and super strength which he uses to try and kill a child who has mutant powers when he arrives from the future. Deadpool’s efforts to try and stop him make them appear enemies, but are they really frenemies?

Domino

This member of the X-Men, played by Zazie Beetz, is a markswoman with incredible athletic abilities that uses these skills for good. But perhaps her most valuable power in this Deadpool movie is her cutting sense of humour. But will her sharp edge trump Deadpool’s toilet humour? We doubt it.

It’s safe to say that there is a lot in store for this movie and with perhaps one of the most entertaining run ups to a film we’ve seen, we cannot wait for the 18th May 2018 – we will be front row kitted out in our Deadpool merch!

If Deadpool isn’t your thing, we have plenty more superhero merch waiting for you on our website!
